Almost two weeks after it went official, it’s time for me to make the announcement here: I am working on our new startup, Gameeel.
We will be working on downloadable games for the PC, and the first title will be a casual title.
We who? It is a team of four, comprising me and fellow Gameloft refugee Yu Kai, and two others who would prefer to remain anonymous as for now.
We have no logo, no office space, no business cards, no salary, no vc investment, no 100 page business plan, no registered papers, nor any idea of how to pronounce our own startup name, and all that will sustain us until we launch or first title are our own not so deep pockets, the spirit of remaining independent, and the desire to make our own games. Times will be tough ahead, luckily I don’t have kids or car installment(I don’t even own a bicycle) to worry about yet.
Why Gameeel? I thought of the Chinese name first actually – 鳗游 – which is a pun of 漫游(roaming or wandering). You see, I’ve been having plenty of eel for food in Shanghai. When I mentioned the name to my partners, I believe Yu Kai had this English to Chinese dictionary software installed, and he mouseover-ed the word eel and saw an explanation along the lines of “a fish that is slippery and hard to catch hold of”. We instantly liked the name.
